Airbag Warning Light On? Here's What It Really Means

An airbag warning light is one of the most misunderstood dashboard warning lights — and one of the most important. Here's what it means, why it comes on and what you should do about it.

Airbag Warning Light On? Here's What It Really Means

The airbag warning light — also known as the SRS warning light — is one of the most important dashboard warning lights on any modern vehicle. Yet it's also one of the most commonly ignored. Many drivers assume it's a minor issue, or that the airbags will still work even with the light on. Neither assumption is correct.

At National AutoTec, we specialise in airbag, SRS and crash data services across Melbourne. Here's everything you need to know about what the airbag warning light means and why you shouldn't ignore it.

What Is the SRS System?

SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System — the collective name for all the safety systems in your vehicle designed to protect occupants in a collision. This includes:

  • Front airbags
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Knee airbags
  • Seat mounted airbags
  • Seatbelt pretensioners
  • Seatbelt buckle sensors
  • The airbag control module
  • Impact sensors throughout the vehicle
  • The clockspring in the steering column
  • All associated wiring and connectors

When any component in this system develops a fault, the airbag warning light illuminates to alert the driver. And when the light is on, the entire SRS system may be disabled — meaning in a collision, your airbags may not deploy at all.

Why Is My Airbag Light On?

There are numerous reasons the airbag warning light can illuminate. The most common causes include:

After a Collision If your vehicle has been involved in a collision — even a minor one — the airbag system may have stored crash data that needs to be cleared. In more serious collisions where airbags have deployed, the entire SRS system requires professional repair before it can function again.

Faulty Airbag Module The airbag control module — the brain of the SRS system — can develop faults through age, water ingress, voltage spikes or physical damage. A faulty module will trigger the airbag warning light and disable the entire system.

Seatbelt Pretensioner Fault Seatbelt pretensioners are pyrotechnic devices that tighten the seatbelt in a collision. They can develop faults over time or after minor collisions — triggering the airbag warning light even if no airbags deployed.

Clockspring Fault The clockspring is a coiled electrical connector in the steering column that allows the steering wheel to rotate while maintaining electrical connections to the airbag, horn and steering wheel controls. Clocksprings wear out over time and are a common cause of airbag warning lights — particularly on higher mileage vehicles.

Impact Sensor Fault Impact sensors throughout the vehicle detect collision forces and trigger airbag deployment. A faulty or damaged impact sensor will trigger the airbag warning light and may prevent correct airbag deployment in a collision.

Wiring Fault Damaged, corroded or poorly connected wiring in the SRS circuit will trigger the airbag warning light. SRS wiring is yellow coded throughout the vehicle and requires specialist diagnosis and repair.

Low Battery Voltage A weak or failing battery can cause voltage fluctuations that trigger the airbag warning light. This is one of the less serious causes — but still requires professional diagnosis to confirm.

Seat Occupancy Sensor Fault The front passenger seat contains an occupancy sensor that determines whether the passenger airbag should deploy. A faulty occupancy sensor will trigger the airbag warning light and may disable the passenger airbag.

What Happens If I Ignore the Airbag Warning Light?

This is the critical question — and the answer is serious. When the airbag warning light is on:

  • Your airbags may not deploy in a collision — leaving you and your passengers without supplemental restraint protection in the event of an accident
  • Your seatbelt pretensioners may not fire — meaning your seatbelts won't tighten in a collision
  • Your vehicle may not pass a roadworthy inspection — a functioning SRS system is a roadworthy requirement
  • Your insurance claim may be affected — if a collision occurs and your SRS system was known to be faulty, your insurer may dispute the claim

Ignoring an airbag warning light is not a minor oversight — it's a serious safety risk to you, your passengers and other road users.

What Is a Crash Data Reset?

After a collision where airbags have deployed or significant impact forces have been detected, the airbag control module stores crash data — a record of the collision event that prevents the system from functioning again until it's been professionally assessed and cleared.

A crash data reset involves professional diagnosis of the airbag module, clearing of the stored crash data and verification that the system is functioning correctly after the reset. In some cases where the crash data cannot be cleared, or where the module has been physically damaged, a replacement module is required.

All crash data resets at National Auto-Tec are carried out using OEM manufacturer software and are fully documented for insurance purposes.

What Does Airbag & SRS Repair Involve?

At National Auto-Tec, our airbag and SRS services cover every component of the system:

Airbag Module Diagnosis & Repair Full diagnostic scanning of the airbag control module — identifying fault codes, stored crash data and module faults. Repair or replacement carried out where required.

Seatbelt Pretensioner Replacement Seatbelt pretensioners that have fired in a collision are replaced and coded — restoring full SRS system function.

Clockspring Replacement & Coding Worn or damaged clocksprings diagnosed and replaced — restoring steering wheel airbag connection and eliminating the airbag warning light.

Impact Sensor Replacement & Coding Faulty impact sensors identified, replaced and coded — ensuring correct airbag deployment trigger in a future collision.

SRS Wiring Diagnosis & Repair All SRS wiring diagnosed and repaired to manufacturer specifications — using correct procedures for working safely with pyrotechnic SRS components.

Full SRS System Report Every job completed with a comprehensive SRS diagnostic report — documenting the fault, repair carried out and post-repair system verification. Accepted by all major insurers.

Don't Drive With an Airbag Warning Light

Your airbag system exists for one reason — to protect your life in a collision. When the warning light is on, that protection may not be there when you need it most.

If your airbag warning light is illuminated — whether after a collision, after a repair, or for no obvious reason — contact National Auto-Tec for a professional SRS diagnosis. Our mobile service covers all of Melbourne and we provide same day bookings for urgent SRS faults.
